City Guide: Things to Do in Vancouver from a Local’s POV

Surrounded by coastal shorelines, snow-capped mountains, and evergreen forests, Vancouver is best known for its natural beauty. But beyond the scenic hiking trails and ski slopes, there lies a whole other side of the city: vibrant neighbourhood streets, independently-owned boutiques, hidden cocktail bars, and patios perfect for a mid-day drink.

For those looking to explore the city like a local, we asked our team for their top picks on where to get started.

1. Walk or Bike the Vancouver Seawall

Vancouver’s Seawall is the longest uninterrupted waterfront path in the world – and a must-do for anyone visiting the city. The iconic Stanley Park Seawall offers a 9-kilometer waterfront path with panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, and downtown skyline. Whether on foot or renting a bike, you’ll pass forest trails, totem poles, and beaches that are perfect for a quick pause or photo op.

If you’ve got time in the city – don’t stop there. The False Creek section of the Seawall is seriously underrated. An early morning jog along the Yaletown route is perfect for sunrise marina views, while a stroll around Olympic Village takes you past creative art installations and views of BC’s most iconic attractions.

2. Take the False Creek Ferry to Granville Island

Granville Island is Vancouver’s cultural peninsula and a haven for foodies and artists alike. Wander through the Public Market for fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and seasonal treats, then browse stalls of handcrafted goods and galleries showcasing local talent. Our favourite way to get there? Hop on the False Creek Ferry from downtown and enjoy a scenic ride across the water.

3. Wander historic Gastown

Cobblestone streets, vintage lampposts, and a steam clock that’s as iconic as the neighborhood itself, Gastown is Vancouver’s historic heart. Boutique shops, art galleries, and cutting-edge restaurants sit alongside centuries-old architecture, creating a perfect blend of old-world charm and contemporary cool. Some of our favourite things to do here: Grab a coffee at Revolver, browse eclectic homegoods at Old Faithful Shop, shop sustainable designer brands at One of a Few, then finish the day with a glass of natural wine at Bar Tartare.

4. Explore Mount Pleasant shops

A bustling community with a trendy mix of taprooms, diverse eateries, consignment stores, and cozy cafes, Mount Pleasant is where the city’s creatives gather. Hunt for your new favourite vintage tee at F as in Frank, score designer consignment pieces at Hey Jude, make a quick lunch stop at Le Marché St. George, or discover your new favourite restaurant at the locally-dubbed “Michelin Mile” – a stretch of Michelin-recognized restaurants and bars along Main Street.

5. Check out Chinatown’s Award-winning Cocktail Bars

In recent years, Vancouver’s Chinatown has emerged as the city’s best cocktail scene. Behind understated façades, you’ll find intimate bars serving inventive drinks crafted by some of the city’s top mixologists. The award-winning Keefer Bar sits next door to Keefer House, while retro-chic Chickadee Room is just across the street. And in case you need a few more to add to your list: nothing beats Meo’s 80s-inspired interiors, or the adventure of finding Laowai (hint: look for a dumpling shop).
